Election Results

Elections are over and there were some big victories for the LGBT community. For those of you that decided to crawl under a rock the second you left the voting polls here's a run over of some significantly huge events that took place last night...

Washington voted to legalize same-sex marriage.
As did Maine.
And Maryland.
Minnesota rejected a gay marriage ban that would have changed the constitution.
America elected their first EVER lesbian senator! Congrats to Tammy Baldwin.
America reelected a president who made legalizing gay marriage part of his campaign.

Congrats to America for being more accepting of their fellow Americans than I thought they would be. I'm not gonna get my hopes up in saying that gay marriage will be legal in every state over the next four years because Obama is just one man but i will say that this election definitely gave me hope that things will head in the right direction for us.

What do you think will be the result for our community over the next four years?

Marriage v Civil Union

GOSH! You guys are a tough crowd! So many views yet no one will comment. Be brave!

Today I had a discussion with a coworker who is thinking of getting married. After listen to his thoughts he asks me if Id ever thought of getting married. I replied, "I would if I could". He asked why I couldn't. I told him gay marriage wasn't legal in Michigan. He says they are in Florida.

Pause. It never dawned on me how little people know about our world so for my straight and ally readers I wanna break it down.

First and foremost, gay marriage is not legal in Florida. Second a marriage and a partnership or civil union are totally different things. When you decide to get married you are seen as husband and wife. These titles hold so much significance. Its a bond to stay together for eternity. Its a symbol of your love to one another. Your no longer recognized as a you but a they.

We don't get that. We are taxed as a couple but we are not wife and wife or husband and husband. We become two "yous" that never reach a plural form. When we have kids theirs one name on the birth certificate. Depending on the state were in our union might not even be recognized.

Its just not the same. Marriage is like the first place trophy, a civil union is the participation ribbon and its not at all based on us. Its some slap in the face by a society that yells at least we gave you something. But its not enough, do you understand?

Put yourself in our shoes..... That lovely wife and those gorgeous kids, the fact that if anything ever happens to you they will still be taken care.... Imagine that was nothing but a dream.... Then tell me you'd still accept it.

Happy Coming Out Day!!!

Coming Out Day is a national holiday that's celebrates the coming out of the closet as LGBT persons. Its a day to help others on their journey to being able to be loud and proud. Its a day to share stories of people that are already out. Its a day to build hope and pride by letting people new to this community know that it gets better and if they have no one else they have a friend in is. Rather important a day in my book!

I've told my coming out story over and over again BUT if you still haven't heard it, click that link! This year I'm gonna do something different.... I want you to share your story with me and my readers. Who will be brave enough to share?

Gay-Parenting: Rights & Not-So-Rights

I dont' know how many of you know but I have a 4-year-old daughter and I recently sat her down and explained my sexuality to her. Now some of you might say shes a little young and I didn't have to do it just yet but 4 is an impressionable age and I decided to tell her before someone else gave her the impression that how I'm living is wrong. Before I tell you guys of my experience with that conversation I wanna know how you told your kids or how you would of done it i you had children.

How would you have explained it?
When would you have told them?

Gender Identity Crisis

My first request comes from a very dear friend of mine on gender identity. Shes looking to be a dancer but she chooses to identify as a stud and the industry doesn't accept that. Auditions call for women to bring heels and head shots must have makeup. That's just not her! So should she conform to what they want just to get those parts or should she be her knowing that will cost her?

I personally feel that she should identify as her but dance and audition with the men. How possible is that to do, Ive no idea because I'm not in the dance industry. Or better yet find a stud dancer thats been in her shoes and ask advice. But I'm definitely no expert!

Let us know what you think about the whole subject!

Olympics ReCap

A couple of weeks ago I posted a list of 18 out and proud Olympians, did you watch their performances? Upon further research 5 gay athletes were added to the list. How did we do?

Seimone Augustus brought home GOLD with the US Womens Basketball team, as did Megan Rapinoe with the US Soccer team and Carl Hester, a Great Britain equestrian. Marilyn Agliotti, Carlien Dirkse van den Heuval, Maartje Paumen and Kim Lammers also took GOLD with the Netherlands field hockey team.

Judith Arndt took SILVER for Germany in cycling. Edward Gal took BRONZE as a Netherlands equestrian as did Lisa Raymond for US Tennis.

Out of 23 athletes, 10 medaled. If Team Gay were an actual team that would place them right above the Czech Republic with 24th place overall. All in all I think THAT is something for the LGBT community to be proud of.

Victory to Service Members

This is one of the biggest victories for LGBT Service members since "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was deemed unconstitutional. The Pentagon announced last week that it will be allowing service members to march in uniform in a gay pride parade FOR THE FIRST TIME IN U.S. HISTORY. It may be no big deal to you but its a huge deal to me and definitely a beautiful thing

The whole story

A Gay Friendly Network?

Lets see how well you know your late night television, can you guess these characters?

This animated one-year old prodigy is obsessed with world domination. Hes the youngest of three children and his best friend is a teddy bear named Rupert. Hes been shown dressed as a female, dancing to techno in a room full of shirtless guys and carries a photo of Chris Noth in his wallet. Do you know who he is?

This heavily pierced female is the proprietor of Moralton's lone sex and piercings shop. Shes become the warm and caring person that another character named Orel has come to trust the most. The only story of her past known is when her heart was broken by the mother of one of Orel's friends. Can you guess her name?

If you guessed Stewie from 'Family Guy' and Stephanie Putty of 'Moral Orel' you would be correct and they aren't the only ones. Adult Swim hosts 33 more LGBT Characters including Walter & Perry of 'Home Movies', Valerie of 'Frisky Dingo' and Alice of 'Superjail'.

Positive or negative that LGBT characters are all over the network? Some might see it as a negative that they're poking fun at our community but I see it as a positive. I think its a good thing that the gay characters are treated just like the straight characters even though they are cartoons (made to be funny) some of these LGBT characters hold good jobs, live normal lives and have healthy relationships.

Whats your opinion?

Same-Sex Wedding Blues

Your wedding is supposed to be one of the most amazing days of your life. The white dress, the perfect venue, committing to spend the rest of your life with the love of your life in front of friends and family... Every girl dreams of this but that dream may be harder to reach if you identify as part of the LGBT community.

Same-sex marriage has been and still is the LGBT Community's biggest battle on American soil and one that wont be easily won. Evidence of this is seen everyday, most recently in Mississippi where a lesbian couple was denied their venue of  choice because the museum claims the ceremony violates state law. Mother of the bride spoke with Lauren Jow of The Advocate.

“As a mother, I have dreamed of giving my daughter the wedding that she desires, and I want her to be able to get married in her hometown in front of our family and friends,” said Veronica Rodriguez, Sturgis’s mother. “We are not asking Mississippi to recognize Ceara and Emily’s relationship, although it should. We are just asking that they have the opportunity to hold a ceremony in a public place – the same as other couples.”

I personally don't see why legalizing same-sex marriage is such a big deal. I'm no money expert but the amount of money put into weddings and being able to tax the new couple is a plus for the economy. With the amount of support given to it already it would def bring a better sense of pride in our country. From every standpoint its a positive except religiously and that is precisely why we separate church from state.

I wish Ceara and Emily the best of luck on having their perfect wedding. May you one day be recognized as a married couple by this "great" nation.

Gayest Cities in America

So I've graduated college (hold the applause) the next big step is finding a job and a place to call home. In wanting to be an LGBT Journalist I've come across The Advocates Gayest Cities in America and thought Id share.

Their criteria for judging was hilarious but such a great idea. there were 9 factors to the equation: LGBT elected officials, WNBA teams, International Mr. Leather semifinalists, Imperial Court chapters, Softball teams that competed in the Gay Softball World Series, LGBT bookstores, Nude yoga, Transgender protections, and concerts by Gossip, the Cliks and the Veronicas. The link above will give you the breakdown of each city. So top 15 gayest cities are.... (DRUM ROLL)

15. Denver, Colorado
14. Long Beach, California
13. Austin, Texas
12. Portland, Oregon
11. Little Rock, Arkansas
10. Grand Rapids, Michigan
9. Atlanta, Georgia
8. Knoxville, Tennessee
7. St. Paul and Minneapolis

Day 18

Something about the LGBT community you don’t understand or have a question about.

I always ask the same question... Why is the LGBT community so divided and judgmental amongst each other?

Day 17

Your first experience with an LGBT organization or event (Day of Silence, Pride, etc).

Spirit Day was my first LGBT event. For those of you who don't know Spirit Day is a day that everyone wears purple in remembrance of the LGBT youth who've taken their own lives due to bullying or what have you... This particular year we lost a young man like the day before, might have been a couple days. His name was Corey Jackson and I didn't know him personally but I had a ton of friends who knew him and it turned Oakland University's campus upside down. It was a huge tragedy but it was nice to see the support given by other students. The campus was literally painted purple...

Day 16

A picture from your first LGBT relationship or of your first LGBT crush.

...

Day 15

Your favorite LGBT quote.

My favorite LGBT quote comes from my little sister Khyrah....

"They say same-sex marriage is a threat to society. But what has
heterosexual marriage done for us? Did it lower taxes? Did
the price of gas go down? Did it end the war? Did it end racism,
sexism, bullying... any of that? No, life goes on, however shitty
or wonderful it maybe, just as it would if homosexuals could marry."

Follow her on twitter @IAintShitThough.
A 19 year old activist with a good head on her shoulders far beyond her years... More people should hear what she has to say.

Days 14

Your favorite LGBT song or artist.

My favorite LGBT artists are between Rainbow Noise and Goddess & She but Imma Homo by Rainbow Noise has become my all time favorite song. If you didn't know about them I suggest you jump on the movement ASAP.

Days 12 & 13

Day 12 - Your favorite LGBT movie (or one you’d like to see).
Lost and delirious is by far my favorite LGBT movie with But I'm a cheerleader coming in at a close second. Its a really sad story: two teens fall in love and it ends in tragedy. I love it because its the first LGBT movie I've seen that really brought light to some of the major issues within our community, one of those issues being acceptance. I'm so upset iTunes doesn't carry it or I would seriously watch it every day!

Day 13 - Your favorite LGBT role model/celebrity.
Ellen, hands down. And its not just because she has her own television show. If you don't know her life story, look it up. Years ago she was an actor and she decided to come out as her character on some sitcom. Doing that made her lose everything, her job, her credit as an actor, her life as she knew it and she still stood by that decision as being the best decision of her life. Now she has her own show with awesome ratings and not to mention her beautiful wife. She just makes you realize not only how good you have it but how no matter how bad you have it life gets better. Other heroes are Jenna Talackova and Molly Landreth. Check em out!

Playing CatchUp (Days 8-11)

I was so strong the first week but hey I'm back and I'm here to play catch-up! Forgive me you fabulous people! lol

Day 8 - What do you think the closet or being closeted means to you?
I think that being in the closet is an act of hiding ones true sexuality for the sake of physical or mental safety.

Day 9 - What do you think about LGBT Pride? Is it helpful or hurtful? Encouraged or unnecessary?

How can having pride in ones sexuality or anything else for that matter be considered a bad thing? It should definitely be encouraged!

Day 10 - What does marriage mean to you?
Marriage is the ultimate step in declaring your love for another, its the decision to live as wife and wife or husband and husband for the rest of your lives.

Day 11 - Your favorite LGBT book (or one you’d like to read).
I actually haven't read any LGBT books but if you'd like to recommend any I will gladly add them to my summer reading list! I'd greatly appreciate it guys!

Whose caught up? I'm caught up! Don't let me slack guys! lol

Jun 7, 2012

Day 7

How your parents took it or how you think they might take it.

So its day seven which means I've made it a week! Anyways... back to the question. My mother took it horribly! Tears and banter of where she went wrong turned into lies of this being a phase and me growing out of it... My father took it well actually but he completely mistakes homosexuality for promiscuity and I've grown so tired of trying to explain to him thats not the case.

Day 6

Did you face any problems regarding religion?

Totally did, I cant tell you how many people in the church tried to fix me! I wasn't too keen on Christianity anyway so it gave me an excuse to finally leave and Ive never looked back.

Jun 5, 2012

Day 5

Thoughts regarding inner turmoil about your sexuality; Did you have any? Did it escalate to self-injury or suicidal thoughts?

My biggest thought in it all was thinking I could change it. I thought that if I dated enough guys Id find one that would make this whole sexuality deal change.
The more I found that that wasn't the case, the more I hated myself for not being normal.
It did lead to self injury but never was I suicidal. It was just easier to cover a mental/emotional pain with a physical one.
Im glad to say that hurt myself is no longer the case and neither is inner turmoil. I love who I am and wouldn't trade it for the world.

Jun 4, 2012

Day 4

The first person you came out to and that story.

The first person I came out to was my best friend Ang and I've written about it before so enjoy!

My Coming Out Story

Jun 3, 2012

Day 2

Did you have any experiences as a child that might have foreshadowed your sexuality?

None.

Day 3

How old were you when you knew? What was that like for you?

Looking back now I was definitely just a kid, maybe 11 or 12. It was confusing... Painful... time that I never want to relive.

Jun 1, 2012

Day 1

Your sexual orientation or gender identity. Be creative in your definition.

Committed vagatarian.
Converted 2008.
No chance of turning back.

May 25, 2012

Stud

An African-American and/or Latina masculine lesbian. Also known as ‘butch’ or ‘aggressive’.

Stem

A person whose gender expression falls somewhere between a stud and a femme.

Queer

1. An umbrella term which embraces a matrix of sexual preferences, orientations, and habits of the not-exclusively- heterosexual-and-monogamous majority. Queer includes lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transpeople, intersex persons, the radical sex communities, and many other sexually transgressive (underworld) explorers. 2. This term is sometimes used as a sexual orientation label instead of ‘bisexual’ as a way of acknowledging that there are more than two genders to be attracted to, or as a way of stating a non-heterosexual orientation without having to state who they are attracted to. 3. A reclaimed word that was formerly used solely as a slur but that has been semantically overturned by members of the maligned group, who use it as a term of defiant pride. ‘Queer’ is an example of a word undergoing this process. For decades ‘queer’ was used solely as a derogatory adjective for gays and lesbians, but in the 1980s the term began to be used by gay and lesbian activists as a term of self-identification. Eventually, it came to be used as an umbrella term that included gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people. Nevertheless, a sizable percentage of people to whom this term might apply still hold ‘queer’ to be a hateful insult, and its use by heterosexuals is often considered offensive. Similarly, other reclaimed words are usually offensive to the in-group when used by outsiders, so extreme caution must be taken concerning their use when one is not a member of the group.

Pansexual

A person who is sexually attracted to all or many gender expressions.

Pangendered

A person whose gender identity is comprised of all or many gender expressions.

Metrosexual

First used in 1994 by British journalist Mark Simpson, who coined the term to refer to an urban, heterosexual male with a strong aesthetic sense who spends a great deal of time and money on his appearance and lifestyle. This term can be perceived as derogatory because it reinforces stereotypes that all gay men are fashion-conscious and materialistic.

Male Les•bi•an

A male-bodied person who identifies as a lesbian. This differs from a heterosexual male in that a male lesbian is primarily attracted to other lesbian, bisexual or queer identified people. May sometimes identify as gender variant, or as a female/woman.

Lip•stick Les•bi•an

Usually refers to a lesbian with a feminine gender expression. Can be used in a positive or a derogatory way, depending on who is using it. Is sometimes also used to refer to a lesbian who is seen as automatically passing for heterosexual

Les•bi•an

Term used to describe female-identified people attracted romantically, erotically, and/or emotionally to other female-identified people. The term lesbian is derived from the name of the Greek island of Lesbos and as such is sometimes considered a Eurocentric category that does not necessarily represent the identities of African-Americans and other non-European ethnic groups. This being said, individual female-identified people from diverse ethnic groups, including African-Americans, embrace the term ‘lesbian’ as an identity label.

In•ter•sex

Someone whose sex a doctor has a difficult time categorizing as either male or female. A person whose combination of chromosomes, gonads, hormones, internal sex organs, gonads, and/or genitals differs from one of the two expected patterns.

In•ter•gen•der

A person whose gender identity is between genders or a combination of genders.

Gay

1. Term used in some cultural settings to represent males who are attracted to males in a romantic, erotic and/or emotional sense. Not all men who engage in “homosexual behavior” identify as gay, and as such this label should be used with caution. 2. Term used to refer to the LGBTQI community as a whole, or as an individual identity label for anyone who does not identify as heterosexual.

Femme

Feminine identified person of any gender/sex.

Dyke

Derogatory term referring to a masculine lesbian. Sometimes adopted affirmatively by lesbians (not necessarily masculine ones) to refer to themselves.

Mar 18, 2012

Cis•gend•er

describes someone who feels comfortable with the gender identity and gender expression expectations assigned to them based on their physical sex.

Butch

A person who identifies themselves as masculine, whether it be physically, mentally or emotionally. ‘Butch’ is sometimes used as a derogatory term for lesbians, but it can also be claimed as an affirmative identity label.

Bot•tom

A person who is said to take a more submissive role during sexual interactions.

Bi•sex•u•al

A person emotionally, physically, and/or sexually attracted to males/men and females/women. This attraction does not have to be equally split between genders and there may be a preference for one gender over others.

Summertime.

Prefixes

The words of the day were bicurious, bigendered, and biphobia and when I typed them into the computer they are labeled incorrect, why?

  • These words aren't new.
  • Bi- does mean two, as in they like males & females.

So why aren't they recognized as words? That just doesn't seem right does it? They should be treated as real words, equal to all the other words with that same prefix. Just as being a bisexual should be treated as a real orientation ESPECIALLY by other LGBT people with the same stamp of un-approval by society on their forehead.

Bi•pho•bi•a

The fear of, discrimination against, or hatred of bisexuals, which is often times related to the current binary standard. Biphobia can be seen within the LGBTQIA community, as well as in general society.

Bi•gend•ered

A person whose gender identity is a combination of male/man and female/woman.

Bi•cur•i•ous

A curiosity about having sexual relations with a same gender/sex person.

Mar 10, 2012

A•sex•u•al

A person who is not sexually attracted to anyone or does not have a sexual orientation.

An•dro•gyne

A person appearing and/or identifying as neither man nor woman, presenting a gender either mixed or neutral.

Mar 8, 2012

Al•ly

Someone who confronts heterosexism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, heterosexual and genderstraight privilege in themselves and others; a concern for the well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and intersex people; and a belief that heterosexism, homophobia, biphobia and transphobia are social justice issues.

Mar 7, 2012

A•gen•dered

... a person who is internally ungendered.

LGBT Terminology

In the search to find my own label I've found that not too many people actually know the tons of categories the LGBT Community is broken into so over the course of this month I will be sharing these different labels with you starting today. Educate yourselves and stay posted : )

Jan 10, 2012

A question...

Why is it that the LGBT Community feels the need to place themselves into all these different categories?
